The Greek word that has been translated here as ‘meek’ actually signifies a state of consciousness in which our stormy negative thoughts and emotions, such as anger and malice, have been brought under control. Contrary to the usual connotations of meekness, Jesus is not talking about a submissive or cowardly attitude in our relations with other people. He is talking about our relationship with God. ‘Meekness’ refers to a dignified, controlled, and reverent surrender to divine guidance. This ‘surrender’ is a powerful inner attitude, not a self-degrading outer action. It allows the force of God to enter us and act through us.
