A Temple is a structure made from elements of Earth, but where God may descend from Heaven to dwell among us. For example, the Tabernacle in the Hebrew Bible serves as a dwelling place for the Shechinah, the Feminine ‘Presence’ of God in the world.
It is important to note that God tells Moses the Tabernacle is to be made of ‘gifts from the people’ – i.e., elements of the material realm that are freely given and raised up. Psychologically, these are elements of the material consciousness thatare raised internally and voluntarily consecrated to a higher level.
Thus a Temple is a place of union for the lower self with the higher self. Full of the wisdom of experience of the lower realms, free of its hypnotic spell, purified of its ‘sin’, girded with its power, an Initiate at this stage of the path internally draws up the lower material realm into the higher divine realm, uniting ‘Heaven’ and ‘Earth’, re-creating oneself into an inner Temple. This is also known as the ‘Sacred Marriage of Heaven and Earth’: our lower nature weds our higher nature, a harmony of opposites is obtained, and Two becomes One.
On an individual level, these symbolic statements mean that our soul was sent down to Earth and was dispersed into all the diverse beliefs and opinions, needs and wishes, and conflicting appetites and attitudes that comprise our confused and fragmented inner life. The task of the Initiate is to re-gather all these pieces back together again, to refocus all the scattered aspects of oneself into one joint aim (the building of an inner Temple), and thus to become One again.
So the ability to focus our Attention must be trained. Meditation is the key. – THE DOOR IS OPEN
