ECSTASY AND LUNACY

“Something was not quite right. Demeter could sense it, impossible though it seemed, even as she embraced her beloved Persephone. ‘My child,’ she gasped, ‘surely you did not taste of any food while you were below? Tell me, and hide nothing.’  But Persephone had indeed tasted of the sweet enticing fruit of mortal life: Hades had cleverly slipped a pomegranate seed into her mouth before she left and she had swallowed it. Because of this, Demeter knows, Persephone must remain part of each year in the lower world.

“But this is as it should be, for the soul is of both worlds, the immortal and the mortal – just as wine (including pomegranate wine), the symbol of the soul, is of both worlds: it can fill one with ecstasy or it can fill one with lunacy. Part of the soul always belongs to this world. This is why the Reubenites stay on this side of the Jordan River. This is why Peter must build a church on this side of the veil.”  – THE DOOR IS OPEN, p 135
