For People Who Want to Dream Again

Read an article recently on MSN Money by Liz Weston, where she wrote about people who pulled up stakes and went traveling. Maybe we are doing this all wrong. We should enjoy ourselves in our youth and then settle down and work.

Somewhere I read it is the way it was meant to be, but along the line we buried ourselves in work and ambition and forgot to enjoy life and the earth we live on.

Everyone has at one time or another dreamed of traveling, whether just in our country or around the world. What held us back, money, time, family and JOB? The problem is we lack dreamers, doers and achievers. We want options without effort.

Dreaming seems to be taboo. Napoleon Hill, in his book “Think and Grow Rich”, says that if the mind can conceive it, the body can achieve it. Unfortunately we are so engrossed in ourselves that we cease to dream, plan and achieve. Successful people dare to dream, to plan, to act, to fail and to achieve. Failure is feared when in reality it is nothing more than a check point to success. It has been said, many times, you’re a failure if you quit and you’re a success when you fail and you don’t quit.

Modern day society has become obsessed with winning without challenges. Schools have taken out activities that have winners and losers so as not to traumatize the students. In reality they are being sheltered from reality. Our sense of fairness and feel goodness has taken from our children the competitiveness and the desire for uniqueness and individuality.

I am not an educator so I may not understand the true reason. It has been my experience with this teaching philosophy that students are not motivated to learn only to pass tests. The ability of students (kids) to dream about their future is lost in “pass the test”. Students’ concentration is on passing tests with no meaning or significance. Tests scores do not teach students that they can be anything they can conceive. Test score don’t indicate interests, what curriculum is needed, or how much education is needed.

It is the emphasis on higher learning that causes confusion and frustration in young people. They are constantly told that they have to go to college, when their interests are not in college, but the system inculcates the idea in children. Young people pre-programmed to believe that they must go to college go, only to fail. The failure turns into depression and low self esteem. Unfortunately, the child, prior to being set up for failure, is not given room to explore his/her interest. The student is not given the opportunity to explore his true interest and desires.

Some recent readings reference charter schools indicated they are trying to change the pre-programming in belief that higher education is a must. Students are given the opportunity to explore their interest doing projects related to those interests. Students are guided through the requirements such as Math, English, Science, and Languages based on the individual’s project. The subject matter is shown to the student and easily learned because it is relevant to the project. Boring multiplications, sentence structure, and periodic charts are incorporated and shown to be relevant to all aspects of life whether it is for the nuclear physicist or the hair stylist.

Long way about just to point out that we no longer dream and we only think of jobs. The entrepreneurial spirit and our desire for freedom seem to have left us. We as a society are content with jobs, pay raises, benefits and more time off. We stop dreaming, we become complacent and content with what we have.

Someone sent me a quote, “…to have something you never had, you have to do something you never did….” I feel it is how people used to act, but have forgotten. So I agree retire now, enjoy life, and this wonderful earth. Start by dreaming, by acting as if there is no tomorrow, and by following your dream. Enjoy what you do (travel, read, write or volunteer) just do it! What are you waiting for? – Dream, Act, and Achieve!
