The Meaning of “Jihad”

Moses was not allowed to reach the Promised Land. Jesus was executed by his enemies. But Muhammad conquered his Promised Land, and in his lifetime he achieved extraordinary worldly power.

On the ride home from the last battle, however, he said to his companions,”We have returned from the Lesser Holy War to the Greater Holy War.” When one of them asked him, “What is the Greater Holy War?” he replied, “The war of the soul.”

That is the actual meaning of the word jihad. The inner efforts of the soul to overcome its own negativity, cynicism, pride, and doubt

Here are some other other his words:

“God has no mercy on one who has no mercy for others.”

“None of you truly believes until he wishes for his brother what he wishes for himself.”

“He who eats his fill while his neighbor goes without food is not a believer.”

“Powerful is not he who knocks the other down, indeed powerful is he who controls himself in a fit of anger.”

Islam is the religion of harmony, a harmony that is brought about by Faith in God’s Oneness, Surrender to God’s Will, and Virtue through the constant remembrance of God.
