It’s the weekend. A perfect time to gather with family or friends and prepare a meal. Sharing a meal is a sacred act. In ancient times, sharing a meal was a very serious statement, signifying bonds of loyalty as well as fellowship.
If you serve an animal product, reflect on the ancient Hebrew Sacrifice of Well-Being, or Peace Offering. The festive meal of a Peace Offering, the most common of the sacrifices, was one of the few times when the Israelites would eat meat. Unlike the contemporary practice of selecting a sterile plastic-wrapped steak from the supermarket shelf, they would take complete responsibility for the sacrifice of the animal’s life, slaughtering it themselves, releasing the soul back to God, and sharing its gift of meat in a sacred ceremony of gratitude and thanksgiving. We can’t slaughter our own dinner (most likely), but we can remember to thank the animal for its gift and to thank God and Nature for abundance.
While you are preparing the entire meal, try to remain as awake and conscious as you can. Feel thanks for everyone who participated in the history of the meal – farmers, butchers, workers in packaging plants, truckers, grocers, authors of recipe books, manufacturers of pots and pans, etc. Most importantly, keep your guests-to-be in your heart, and prepare the meal with love.
If you do this, I guarantee that whatever you serve will be both healthy and delicious.
