One day, on a busy street in Louisville, Kentucky, the famous Trappist Monk, Thomas Merton, found himself surrounded by Jews and Christians, Blacks and Whites, and others.
He suddenly experienced a radical sensation ofinclusion. “It was like I was waking from a dream of separateness,” he later wrote, “of spurious self-isolation in a ‘special’ world – the world of renunciation and supposed holiness. The sense of liberation from this illusion of difference was such a relief, that I laughed out loud.
“It is a glorious destiny to be a member of the human race.”
